Right lateral ankle sprain Lateral or classic ankle sprains are ubiquitous in the NBA, so Curry’s likely had hundreds of these over his many years of playing There are 3 main lateral ankle ligaments. ATFL (anterior talofibular) CFL (calcaneofibular) PTFL (posterior talofibular) The ATFL is almost always the first one to get injured. Moderate sprains often include the CFL, and the severe/grade 3 sprains will also include the PTFL. Curry is expected to get an MRI to determine severity. The issue with how our body naturally heals is that it doesn’t have the ability to regrow new ligaments (unfortunately), instead it lays down scar tissue. The issue with scar tissue is that it is weakener & less flexible than regular ligament tissue, so when stressed again, like it was last night when he rolled it, the scar tissue is the first thing to tear because it is the ‘weakest link.’ I’m sure he has had PRP and/or stem cells injected into these ligaments over the years to help strengthen and rebuild the tissue as much as they can. He also wears an ankle brace that hopefully helped prevent him from developing a bad grade 2 (or grade 3). Realistically I think Curry misses a couple games, hopefully it’s nothing more than that.
